After the Restoration of 1815, which had given power back to the old elites, in 1830 many cantons demanded new constitutions. Ticino was the first, as early as July 1830.
On 22 November 1830, in Uster, some ten thousand citizens from the Zurich countryside gathered and demanded equal rights with the city. Within a few months about ten cantons adopted liberal constitutions, with freedom of the press, the separation of powers and public schooling. This was the Regeneration, which paved the way for the federal state of 1848.
