To put an end to the chaos, Napoleon Bonaparte summoned the Swiss representatives to Paris and on 19 February 1803 imposed the Act of Mediation. Switzerland became a confederation of cantons again, under French tutelage.
Six new cantons with equal rights were created: St. Gallen, Graubünden, Aargau, Thurgau, Ticino and Vaud. For Ticino, until then divided into bailiwicks governed by the Confederates, it was its birth as a sovereign canton.
