In May 1961 Piero Manzoni (1933–1963) filled, sealed and labelled 90 tin cans: Merda d'artista (Artist's Shit), 30 grams each, for sale at the price of gold. A provocative gesture that called into question the value of the work of art, the market and the role of the artist.
It is one of the most famous works of the twentieth century, but also one of the least truly known: legends and false information circulate about it. That is why the Fondazione Piero Manzoni has devoted an entire website to it, telling its story with documents, testimonies and verified sources.
